First 30 days: manager plan

A first day works better when someone has thought through the first month. Assign the practical details, make expectations visible and plan the conversations that help a new teammate get established.

Before the start date, then during the first monthFill it in here. Print a copy when you’re ready.

How to use this tool

  1. Complete the plan with the supervisor before the new hire arrives.
  2. Give every task an owner and a target date. Adjust the task list to the role, location and company’s processes.
  3. Use the first-month outcomes to describe a supported ramp-up, rather than assuming full independent performance on day one.
  4. Use the check-ins to listen, clarify and adjust the plan. This worksheet does not certify training or replace your company’s role-specific procedures.

Day 1

  • What is clear, and what still feels uncertain?
  • Do you have the equipment, access and contacts you need?
  • What should we fix before tomorrow?

End of Week 1

  • How does the actual work compare with what we explained?
  • Where do you feel ready, and where would more practice help?
  • Is anything making it harder to do good work?

By Day 30

  • What work shows progress against our three outcomes?
  • What is still unclear or needs more support?
  • What should we keep, change and prioritize next month?
